Accessibility

Black Talent Initiative believes that equity and accessibility are inseparable. Our commitment to dismantling barriers extends to how we build our digital platforms and how we design our events. Everyone who wants to participate in BTI programming should be able to, regardless of ability.

Our Commitment

BTI is committed to making our website, community platform, and event experiences accessible to the widest possible audience. We aim to meet or exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA conformance level, and we treat accessibility as an ongoing practice, not a one-time project.

What We Do

Our team actively works to ensure accessibility across the BTI platform. Current practices include:

  • Semantic HTML. We use proper heading structure, landmarks, and ARIA attributes to ensure assistive technologies can interpret our content accurately.
  • Keyboard navigation. All core functionality is accessible via keyboard, without requiring a mouse or touchscreen.
  • Screen reader support. Pages and interactive elements are labelled so that screen readers can convey their purpose clearly.
  • Colour contrast. Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratios to ensure readability for users with low vision or colour vision differences.
  • Responsive design. The platform adapts to different screen sizes and orientations, supporting users on mobile devices, tablets, and desktops.
  • Focus indicators. Visible focus states help keyboard users navigate and understand where they are on the page.

Event Accessibility

BTI is committed to making our in-person and virtual events accessible. Accommodations we provide or can arrange include:

  • Wheelchair-accessible venues with step-free entry.
  • Reserved accessible seating.
  • Sign language interpretation (on request, with advance notice).
  • Live captioning for virtual or hybrid events.
  • Quiet or low-stimulation spaces at larger events.
  • Dietary accommodations for catered programming.

If you need a specific accommodation for an upcoming event, let us know when you register or contact us at least two weeks before the event so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Known Limitations

While we strive for full accessibility, some areas of the platform may not yet meet every WCAG 2.1 AA criterion. We are actively working to identify and address gaps, and we appreciate your patience as we improve.

Feedback

Accessibility is a continuous effort, and your input helps us get better. If you encounter a barrier on our platform or at one of our events, or if you have suggestions for how we can improve, please contact us:

Please include a description of the issue, the page or feature affected, and the assistive technology you were using (if applicable). We will acknowledge your feedback within five business days and work to resolve the issue promptly.
